How to Prepare for a Mount Kailash Pilgrimage: 2026 Guide

Step-by-step preparation for a Kailash tour: acclimatization, documents, gear, fitness, and what to pack — plus how to choose an organized kora program around the sacred mountain.

How to Prepare for a Mount Kailash Pilgrimage: 2026 Guide

A pilgrimage to Mount Kailash (6,638 m) is one of the most powerful journeys you can take. The mountain is sacred in Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bön. The kora — the circumambulation around the peak — symbolizes an inner path and purification.

If this is your first time, the key is not to rush: altitude, climate, and the rhythm of the route demand respect for your body.

When is the best time to visit Kailash?

The optimal season is May through October, when roads are open and weather is more stable. 2026 is especially significant — the Year of the Fire Horse, when the full saga kora takes place once every 12 years and draws pilgrims from around the world.

For a first visit, choose an organized program with acclimatization in Lhasa — it reduces the risk of altitude sickness and gives your body time to adapt at 3,650–5,000 m.

Physical preparation

In the 2–3 months before departure:

  • add daily walks of 8–12 km;
  • include light running or cycling for endurance;
  • practice breathing exercises — they help at altitude.

The Kailash kora is about 52 km over 3 days. The trail is rocky, with climbs up to 5,630 m (Drolma La pass). Solid fitness is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

Documents and permits

Travel to Tibet requires a Chinese visa and a special Tibet permit. When you book an organized tour, the operator usually handles paperwork — confirm timelines early (at least 4–6 weeks before departure).

What to pack

Clothing (layers):

  • thermal base layers and fleece;
  • windproof jacket;
  • broken-in trekking boots;
  • hat, gloves, sunglasses.

First aid:

  • altitude sickness medication (as advised by your doctor);
  • blister plasters and bandages;
  • personal medicines with extra supply.

Other: power bank, thermos, SPF 50+ sunscreen, wet wipes.

Acclimatization is the key

Professional itineraries start with 2–3 days in Lhasa (3,650 m): gentle walks, Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, gradual increase in activity. Only then — the journey to Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

Skipping acclimatization days to save time is the most common mistake beginners make.

Spiritual preparation

Kailash is not only trekking. Many pilgrims combine the route with meditation, mantras, and journaling. Set your intention (sankalpa) in advance — why you are going — and return to it during challenging moments on the trail.

Our program: Sacred Kailash Kora from Lhasa

At Jay Shambo tours, we run a 13-day Kailash kora program:

  • route via Shigatse, Yamdrok Lake, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery;
  • kora around Kailash and pilgrimage to Lake Manasarovar;

This is a private journey for a closed group — comfort and safety without compromise.

Preparation for Kailash begins long before your flight. The calmer your planning, the deeper the journey itself.

Frequently asked questions

The Jay Shambo tours program is 13 days / 12 nights: acclimatization in Lhasa, travel to Kailash, a three-day kora, and return. Exact dates are confirmed when you book.

Basic hiking experience is helpful. What matters most is good fitness and willingness to walk at your own pace. The route is suitable for prepared travelers aged 30–65.

Lhasa is at 3,650 m; Drolma La on the kora reaches up to 5,630 m. That is why our program includes acclimatization days before the main trek.

Independent travel in Tibet for foreigners is restricted — you need a licensed operator and Tibet permit. An organized tour is the standard and reliable format.

Saga kora is the full circumambulation of Kailash in the Year of the Fire Horse, which occurs once every 12 years. It is believed to bring exceptional blessing. 2026 is such a year.
